The Blue Lagoon Iceland

The Blue Lagoon Iceland

Are you tired of my posts about Iceland yet? Good, me either!! If this is your first read, do not forget to read my other Iceland posts here and here for more Iceland tips! As mentioned in my latest Iceland post, M and I went to the Blue Lagoon (https://www.bluelagoon.com) while vacationing in Iceland and it was THAT good I wanted to dedicate a whole post to it.

The Blue Lagoon is located in Grindavik, Iceland which is around twenty minutes from Keflavik International Airport on your way to Reykjavik, Iceland. Many people either visit the Blue Lagoon the day they arrive in Iceland or the day they depart from Iceland since it is very close to the airport. Since you alllllll know from my previous post that we booked our flights 8 days before our vacation so I was nervous we wouldn’t be able to make appointments at Blue Lagoon due to such late booking and it being one of the twenty-five wonders of the world.

Luckily, I was able to book two “comfort” tickets for the day we departed from Iceland for a 0900 time. There are three different types of tickets you can choose from and the “comfort” tickets were perfect for M and I. As of today, the prices are as follows for different packages.

  • Comfort:
    • $95.00 (USD) for four hours at the attraction (prices decrease at 2000 due to the attraction closing at 2100)
    • Silica Mud Mask
    • 1 towel/person
    • 1 free drink at the swim up bar
  • Premium:
    • $118 (USD) for four hours at the attraction (again, prices decrease at 2000 due to the attraction closing at 2100)
    • Silica Mud Mask with an additional Mud Mask of your choice (lava, mineral or algae)
    • 1 towel, robe and pair of slippers/person (you keep the slippers)
    • 1 free drink at the swim up bar
    • Reservation at the LAVA restaurant (if you want)
    • If you decide on the restaurant reservation at LAVA, there is a complimentary glass of sparkling wine (or non-alcoholic if you prefer)
  • Retreat Spa:
    • $312 (USD) for four hours at the Retreat Spa
    • Private changing rooms (for two, includes walk-in shower, towels, bathrobe and slippers)
    • “Blue Lagoon Ritual”
    • “Retreat Lagoon”
    • Selection of Blue Lagoon signature products for skin care
    • Spa Restaurant
    • 1 free drink

The Blue Lagoon is known to “fill up fast” so make sure to book your accommodations early enough so you have a chance to experience it. M and I lucked out with the day/time of our booking because we booked during Icelands “low time” (Sept-April) for visitors. If you’re visiting Iceland during their “high time” (May- August), book early (like months in advance, early)!!

Our experience was truly amazing. As you look at my photos throughout the post, please note that they are not filtered, the water is truly that blue! The “comfort” tickets were also perfect for us because we truly only needed a towel to cover ourselves before running into the Blue Lagoon. As you can see from the picture below, you end up losing your towel anyway before you run in and you just grab a random towel on your way out because chances are if you hang your towel on your “number” someone most likely took it before running inside (it’s cold people, no judgement). Anyway, there are two huge “locker rooms” separated by male and females. The “changing room” is just like your local fitness center with showers with soap and conditioner, hair dryers, Q-tips, cotton balls, mirrors and most importantly—bags to put your dripping wet bathing suit in! ** Pro tip: I packed a gallon sized ziplock bag to also put our bathing suits in due to us flying back to Chicago just hours after our Blue Lagoon experience. Nobody wants a wet bag.

The lockers are pretty high tech at the Blue Lagoon and it will take you a few minutes to figure them out…I promise. So, give yourself enough time. You must wear your bracelet while in the Blue Lagoon and make sure it doesn’t fall off because this is seriously the only way to your personal belongings once outside the Lagoon itself.

M and I both enjoyed a cider while relaxing and walking around in the Blue Lagoon. Another **pro tip: make an effort to walk around the Blue Lagoon once you are in it, it is massive and with the steam it feels like you are in the Lagoon alone at times. There are saunas you can access and a small waterfall you are able to experience. We wouldn’t have even known this if we didn’t wander around the Blue Lagoon. M and I both thought the face mask stung our faces a bit so we washed ours off right away, but we both have very sensitive skin.

We ended up staying a total of three hours and we both thought that was enough time for our visit. **Pro tip: If you plan to get your hair wet, you MUST put conditioner on your hair (they provide it in their showers) prior to entering the Blue Lagoon. If not, I have read you cannot get a hairbrush through your hair for days. I did not risk it, as you can see from the pictures I put my hair in a bun and hoped for the best. This isn’t just for my lady readers either, M put conditioner in his hair because he planned to dunk his head from the beginning haha!

When we were checking in, I did hear them mention they have bathing suits to “rent.” I am writing this blog to tell you ALLLLLL about our Blue Lagoon experience soooo basically if you forget your bathing suit after reading this…then…well, then IDK. Just don’t forget your bathing suit because why would you want to rent a random one? ANYWAY—go enjoy the Blue Lagoon, have fun, let the waterfall pound your worries away, finish your free drink, don’t forget a waterproof cell phone case AND make sure to do your BEST Mrs. Doubtfire interpretation when you have the Blue Lagoon mud mask on your face!!! 🙂
